About us

Picture
Around 200 years ago the Matts family moved to Northamptonshire.  In 1911 the Cottesbrooke Estate was auctioned and Frederick Matts purchased much of the current farmland and buildings. In 1919 Thomas Charles Matts was born. TC as he became known took the farm over from his father Frederick. In the 1970’s TC’s two sons Charles and John came home joining the family farming business and TC Matts & Sons was born.

Charles and John grew the farming business focusing on arable and sheep production. The late 1990’s were however a difficult time for farming. In order to benefit from improved efficiencies and economies of scale the family farm joined with neighboring farmers to form a single arable contracting business. This business became known as Brixworth Farming Company a business which Charles still runs today.

It was not just arable farming which faced difficulties. In 2001 the farm was hit with foot and mouth
and a core part of its breeding flock sadly had to be put down. This prompted Charles and John to
reflect on the best way forward. After much consideration the business decided to diversify and
better utilise the buildings left vacant by the depleted flock converting them into small workshops
and offices for local business. John has overseen the conversion of these barns and it now makes up
an important part of our business today.

John and Charles our now joined by two of their own sons’ Ian and George. Ian and George are the
fourth generation on the farm. Ian focuses on the agronomy and George on the sheep and the self
storage business. TC Matts & Sons remains at heart a family farming business.
